Downpatrick 5-7 Saval 6-12
Saval u14 Gaels traveled to RGU Downpatrick on Monday night for their first away league game of the season. Although the weather was an improvement on the previous week, a cross-field wind made it challenging for both sets of players.
What followed was a battling performance which has become the norm from this side. The game ebbed and flowed as both teams played some lovely football and scores were in plentiful supply. Attacking midfielder Eoin McNally scored 1-3 in the first half as Saval led at the break 2-5 to 1-6. The other Saval goal coming from the marauding half back Charlie Kearney.
While Saval had the upper hand in the first half, they came under immense pressure as the second half progressed. Despite being quite harshly reduced to 14 players towards the end of the first half the team knew it would require a backs against the wall performance to emerge victorious. And that the greens produced. Deciding the best form of defence was attack, Saval hit Downpatrick where it hurt, on the scoreboard. A range of wonderful points from Hugh Gorman, Paul Lyons, Eoin Digney and Joe Rice was punctuated with some nicely worked goals from Brendan Faloon, James McCarthy, Eoin McNally and Danny Canavan. The lads even managed to cope with further adversity when reduced to 13 players with a black card.
The boys in green were thankful that goalkeeper Eoin Hillen was in fine form pulling off two point blank saves in the second half to keep our noses in front.
Well done to all players on a very good performance and result.
Training continues this week with more big games to look forward to in the upcoming weeks.
