Saval U16 Girls – Wednesday 3rd May 2023
Castlewellan 2-11 Saval 1-7
Saval U16 girls travelled to Castlewellan for the next match in their league division two campaign.
Saval got off to a great start with an early point from Connie McGrath, however it was Castlewellan that settled into their stride and soon took a commanding lead in the game. Saval girls struggled to gain possession in the early period of the game and a strong and physical Castlewellan team registered two goals and seven points in the first half – the majority of which came in the first 20 minutes of the game. At half time the scoreline was 2-7 to 0-5 in favour of Castlewellan and this left our girls with a lot to do in the second half.
However this game was not over and the Saval girls came out fighting in the second half with a battling and gutsy performance. Special mention to the Saval goalkeeper Katie Grant who returned from a recent injury and despite not being fully match fit, put in a brave and battling performance in goals. Katie McShane worked tirelessly in defence to limit the scores from a fast and determined Castlewellan forward line, while Katie O’Hare was commanding the centre of the field, winning the high balls and feeding the forward line to allow the Saval forwards to besiege the Castlewellan goal and maintain a constant threat throughout the second half.
Overall the girls showed great character and were the stronger team in the second period of the game. It certainly made for an exciting match and on another night our scoreline would have been better, but tonight was to be Castlewellan’s and they claimed the two points with a 2-11 to 1-7 victory.
Well done to both teams for a competitive game of football. Saval would like to wish Castlewellan all the best for the remainder of their season.
