al U16 Girls – Sunday 16th July 2023
Saval 5-13 Downpatrick 3-6
Saval U16 girls continued their league campaign this week with a home fixture against a spirited Downpatrick team. In a competitive and entertaining game, the strength and depth of the Saval team won through in the end.
Both sides played good attacking football with Downpatrick forward line continually presenting a threat, ensuring Saval had to remain focused throughout the game. Saval girls however showed great character. In midfield Emily O’Hagan and Orlaith McGuinnes were winning a lot of ball and continually pushing the game towards our forwards. Cassie McAloon and Aoife Quinn registered two goals each and proved a constant handful for the Downpatrick back line. Mollie Havern, Sarah Jobey and Aisling McAvoy were lively in the forward half winning countless balls and registering scores in equal measure.
Saval were three points ahead at the half-time break and were playing a patient game, building from the back and maintaining a constant threat on the Downpatrick goal. Special mention to Sarah McGinn who marshalled the half back line and scored six points herself as free taker. Our back line was excellent with Cliodhna Lennon and Lucy Shiels tirelessly closing down play and Grace Fergusson resolute and strong at full back ensuring Downpatrick chances were limited. Katie O’Hare and Katie McShane worked tirelessly around the middle of the field to maintain the pressure on the Downpatrick backline.
In the end Saval were too strong and a fifth and final goal from Ursula Hall sealed a well-deserved win for the girls. Well done to both teams for a competitive game of football. Saval would like to wish Downpatrick all the best for the remainder of their season.
